I keep seeing people asking if someone is using 3rd party software for self assessment tax returns.
I personally have never used one but i'm interested in the cost involved in having one and the best one on the market.

Do a search on Accountingweb
for Tax Software and you will find a number of threads in recent months & years on this topic.
I think there was an article on this, though I cannot quickly find it
Taxcalc for me
One thread here:
https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/anyanswers/taxcalc-software
I use taxcalc and find it very straightforward and easy to use.
I have also used PTP.
BTC
I changed to BTC this year and have nothing but praise for it so far - Intuitive system but what makes them stand out for me is the level of tech support I had both when setting up the system- and since then with any queries I had. Small UK based team - nice to have a familiar name at the end of the phone. Totally recommend - Couple of different packages but you are looking at approx £300/400 plus VAT pa I think from memory.
What do you want to spend?
John,
In case you still have not taken the plunge I can tell you there are several that will really help you process any SA workload. This is based on the fact that I have sold and/or seen demonstrations of all the major packages (I used to work at Digita).
As mentioned before, BTC and Taxcalc are both excellent, and not expensive. If you need even more functionality (maybe not in this case) then look at Digita. This is not an exhaustive list - you can find a list of all the approved suppliers on the HMRC website.
Costs for these are generally in the £300-£400 range as mentioned, with some charging an initial fee. Make sure you know what you are getting as not all will include partnership returns (SA800) but all have excellent track records in filing on line.
All of these are modular in that you will only pay for what you need. However do bear in mind if you are going to need other services and get these at the same time. Things like....
Practice management (or even a basic CRM system to keep you organised?)
Bulk email (mailing functionality for newsletters, or info request letters)
Accounts Production (in the future? will need to be ixbrl)
Document Management
Hope that helps - by all means call me for a chat - we offer impartial advice on software to firms of all sizes....
Regards
Dan
