I am very careful with spam emails. they all go into my spam folder and are easily identified and deleted. Over the last few days, however, ZIP files have suddenly started appearing in the "Downloads" folder. They obviously get deleted but I was wondering how this happens. Today's file was entitled "Your Mortgage Payments". Does this happen to anyone else?

There have always been some spam emails that had attachments. But your email client shouldn't be downloading them
I use spambayes. Some find it a bit tricky to set up but it learns as it goes along and sends 99.99% of spam into my "permanent delete" folder... which then gets autodeleted.
I would urgently do complete scans of your system, using an Antivirus, plus Malwarebytes, SuperAntispyware, TDSKiller and Hitman Pro. Make sure you check that each of them is set to scan everything.
There is a massive issue with Spam levels across the globe carrying Ransomware. The reason is a lot of money is being made using this type of attack. Organisation must take preventative action to protect themselves against these threats. We are receiving incoming calls every week now from a new victim of ransomware. Many organisations small and large just don't have enough protection in place. There is now a need for a layered approach to computer security to secure both the perimeter and the interior.
