Advice on software

Advice on software

Didn't find your answer?

Hi everyone,
I'm just starting out on my own and am looking for some advice.
At the moment the bulk of my work is going to be producing final accounts from a sage tb and filling them, companies house and hmrc also.
The companies are mainly one man band ltd companies. I was looking at purchasing vt final accounts. Just wondered what opinions are on them? In particular the ixbrl as I haven't come across this yet, went on maternatity leave before this was around!
Also would I still need to use a checklist if using their accounts? Would I need a tax software package in addition or is the hmrc online filing ok?
Thanks everyone
Ps hopefully I'll get on my feet soon and may be able to contribute to the site instead of just keep asking questions lol!

Visual Transaction

You will see many recommendations on here for visual transaction (also known simply as VT), and I would go along with that. It is not an accounts package as such, as it is what they call an add-in or add-on to Microsoft Excel. Presumably you already have this program.

You will need a checklist and the one I recommend is "Preparing Company Accounts 2011-2012". Not a checklist as such, but a book with all the disclosures detailed etc and sample accounts, so you can easily refer to it to get your disclosures correct.

Tax software: these are cheap to buy and you can use taxcalc for filing your CT600 forms. You will need to attach the iXBRL file produced by visual transaction.

VT is definitely the best one especially if you're starting!  Once you've built your client-base, you may go for IRIS.

Taxcalc
Thanks for the help!
Been looking at the taxcalc website and the stand alone ct600 package at 150+ vat looks very reasonable. I've done some families self assessments online which seem very easy and straightforward so I'm thinking if I get some clients like that also then I can do them like that and just keep the package for the ct600s as it's considerably more expensive to get a package to do both.
Just wondering what your thougts are?
