Assistance with stock-take

Didn't find your answer?

Hi

Got a client who has bought a farm which needs renovation and rebuilding to it's former glory.

Phone call today from them to say that they'd bought a lot of worms to help improve the soil - wants to know what to code them to and whether they should count them as stock.

Anyone fancy helping me dig at year-end?

Still laughing now!

Charming worms

I know a lot of fishermen who would happily help you - of course you'd have to make an allowance for stock losses.

Then of course you also have to account for stock eaten by the local bird population.

And have you considered the breeding implications - maybe you should keep a pedigree stock book and tag every worm ?  Aren't worms capable of mating with themselves?  So your pedigrees wont be family trees, more - straight lines ?????

I'm afraid I have no idea what the average lifespan of a worm is, so can't advise you what would be a reasonable period to depreciate them over.

Of course, if you want really expert help with your stocktake, why not contact these guys -http://www.wormcharming.com/

Whoopee

Maybe I could worm my way in by asking the rate of pay or contract rate. I am just glad he didn't ask about herd basis - mind you not as daft as it seems as they will inevitably breed

To Our Welsh wizard

"I'm afraid I have no idea what the average lifespan of a worm is, so can't advise you what would be a reasonable period to depreciate them over." Will have to learn how to quote however my last pet worm lived for 6 years and lumbricids are generally believed to live to approx 4 years in the wild where all sort of predators are present (including HMRC fishing team).

Oh dear it is getting late so off to stroke my lumbricids

Brings back memories

of having to attend stock checks at stupid times of year as a trainee.  I particularly remember one on New Years Day after a very heavy night, I spent so much time trying not to be sick that they could have told me anything!

I also remember the lovely fixed asset verification checks in industrial plants where you ask to see the widgetmaker and they show you a bit of machinery which could be anything or even an empty metal box, and you just ticked the sheet as you really hadn't got a clue what a widgetmaker looked like!  Oops, I'm sure I wasn't alone though!

I recall doing a stock take at a managed pub - there was half a bottle of whisky so we decided that it was far too much trouble to enter it on the stock sheet, value it, etc etc - and is a half empty bottle really of value as it would be hard to sell an opened bottle.  It was quite a problem, and there was only one solution I could think off - so, being extremely concientious about wanting the stock sheets to be as accurate as possible, we drank the stock - strictly in the interests of a more accurate stock list of course :)

I have no idea what time we finished that stock take, but I do recall having a really thick head the next morning.
