Brewdog's big bet

What will those wags think of next?

Didn't find your answer?

After the 'equity for punks' crowdfunding scheme set them on their way, those publicity-hungry tinkers at Brewdog have decided to go one further and (their words) 'shake the yawn-inducing financial establishment to its foundations'.

Joe Public invests then the Brewdog founders take all the share money to a casino, put it on red or black and spin the wheel.

Here are the details - any thoughts...?

Why do I need them- they are corporate dogs standing between the individual investor and the market- lets be more radical, I will take the money I would have invested in them down to the casino myself, if I win I will subscribe for twice the number of shares if I lose , well, so what, it is only money.

What a bunch of pretentious poseurs!!!!

Well, if this is in America then it sounds like it violates federal gambling laws so will probably get stopped before it happens.

This is neither big nor clever.

Give us your money and we'll bet it on roulette is not an investment, so has nothing to do with the "financial establishment" yawn-inducing or otherwise. Whilst the scale may be different, using other people's money to bet is also hardly an original idea.

But you've written about it, so their obvious aim of getting publicity by this "edgy" move has worked. I'd rather they stuck to making beer though (their stuff isn't half bad).

In fairness stephurhan, I found it and posted it in AA as I thought AWeb members might be able to add their own perspectives on what is obviously a marketing gimmick - as they have.

There are no plans to develop this into a block-busting long-read news piece :-)

Duly noted, though I could see it as 9am round-up fodder.

I think the point still stands though. The stunt grabs attention. People write about it in various forms. (articles, blog posts, etc) and its free publicity with little outlay.

Still like their beer though. Was it searching for a refreshing tipple that brought this to your attention?

Meanwhile, in the AccountingWeb office.

John Stokdyk : Why are you looking at that beer website, Tom?
Tom Herbert : I'm........er........researching their plan to shake the yawn-inducing financial establishment to its foundations.
John Stokdyk : Good work Tom. Carry on.

:-)

Update: Looks like Tim Vane called this one correctly. Brewdog has posted the following:

"The powers that be don’t seem to like gambling as much as we do.

"We are in discussions regarding the future of BrewDog’s Big Bet

"Stay tuned for further updates...!"

Could it be that they've got all the publicity they needed? Were they even planning to run it at all?

There are two possibilities:-
(1) The people in charge of Brewdog are cretins and did not do the research.
(2) The marketing team have pulled a cheap publicity stunt.

Stepurhan must be from the South. Up ‘ere in the North, we don’t like to drink flat [***].

Yeah, what I don't like is the fact the bottles are only a wretched 330ml.

Drinking ale from a bottle just seems wrong to me. Lager is fine, but not ale.

Yes, you can just pour it into a glass following the purchase, but what size glass?? It's too small a quantity for a pint glass, and too large for a half.

BrewDog is a giant financial con. They attract people to effectively join their VIP club but use wording like "investors". The uneducated will believe that they own a piece of the company when in reality the shares are categorised in a way that gives them pennies. People will assume they will have voting rights, dividends, etc. "Owned by thousands of people" is just a paper marketing trick.

The FCA should have put a stop to their practices years ago.

I would suspect this is the last roll of the dice for Brew Dog in more ways than one.

The craft beer bubble has had its day and i suspect about to burst as people move onto the next big thing.

With regards to this publicity stunt it will either go 2 ways one will show them as reckless the other as pair of dicks who have just blown a load of someones elses money for a laugh.

I have invested in a fair few crowd/ kickstarter style schemes, but these just look like a pair of clowns who hit on something at the right time, but will probably blow the lot.

If drinking flat beer with twigs in it is your thing, fill your boots.

The bar in Newcastle they have is poor compared to most other venues in the city and I would be suprised if it last much longer.
