Can you pay Class 2 NI at a later date?

Didn't find your answer?

I have a self employed client who doesn't have to pay class 2 NI as her profit is below the threshold.  She can't afford to pay class 2 NI voluntarily now either but would you be able to pay class 2 NI voluntarily at a later date?  Or would it have to be class 3 if it's at a later date?

You can pay Class 2 in a later year. Look at sec 12 of the Social Security Contributions & Benefits Act 1992 and the Contributions Regulations 2001. There are specific rules about paying voluntary Class 2 late. Sec 12 refers explicitly to sec 11(6), which is the basis for paying Class 2 voluntarily where profits are below the threshold.
