claiming back VAT from training cost of staff

claiming back VAT from training cost of staff

Didn't find your answer?

hi everyone. My partner  was sent on to training by my boss(She's employed). Now she's leaving the business so she has to pay for 80% of it's cost plus all incured expences(hotels, transport). My question is:can she claim it back if the vat is already on her bosses books? How will she prove it if he paid for it(from his account) but now he's getting most of it back?

She may not have to pay the VAT

If her boss is VAT registered then they should have claimed back the VAT and she shouldn't have to pay the boss the VAT part.

Expanding on Peter's

Firstly make sure that it is in her contract that she has to pay 80% of her training costs if she leaves.  If not there should be nothing to pay (recently discussed on AWEB).

If it really is the case then she will be compensating her employer for their loss, NOT 'buying' the training.  Compensation should therefore be based on the net cost to the employer and does not attract VAT.
