Donation from US individual

Donation from US individual

Didn't find your answer?

I work for a UK registered charity. A donor from USA want to make a donation but wants us to provide 503C conduit for a U.S. charitable contribution.

I have never heard of this. I tried ringing the IRS (which cost a fortune and got nowhere). I have also tried the Charities Commission, who haven't heard of this either.

Does anyone know what this is, or what the UK equivalent might be.

Many thanks

501c3

... is the US equivalent of a charity recognised by the Inland Revenue. Your potential donor will only be able to calim tax relief on his US tax return if it is paid into a US body with 501c3 (I think that's the right code) status. Depending on the size of the donation, and the potential for future income from US donors, you could ask a US law firm to set one up for you (and lots of UK charities do; just google 'American Friends of...', but this will be costly.

If its a one off, there are a couple of existing organisations that can receive the donation and route it to you; cafamerica.org is one (linked to the Charities Aid Foundation here https://www.cafonline.org/my-personal-giving/international-giving/dual-t...)
