I have an ongoing hmrc enquiry.
We waited just short of 6 months for a reply received in March.
We replied in May, chased it in August and are still waiting!
I don't suppose there is any legislation we can call upon to just end the enquiry through this non-response?
Any help very much appreciated.

Send a formal request for closure to the inspector
In the letter, clearly state that since you have repeatedly tried to progress this issue with him/her and there has been neither progress nor communication, it is reasonable that this inquiry be closed.
Advise the inspector that if you have not heard by 2-weeks from the date of this letter then you will issue a formal request for closure to the First Tier Tax Tribunal.
That will either stir them into action or give you reasonable justification to have the Tribunal force closure.
In all likelihood the inspector has probably been moved onto something more important and the enquiry has gone to the bottom of someone elses caseload.
It shouldn't happen, but it does. The ball is in your court - serve it.
Wot Frustrated said.
and in addition, send future letters to HMRC with proof of posting so as to avoid the "Oh, we never received that!)
This cuts the ground from underneath them if it ever reaches the FT Tribunal.
