FHL - Gifts to holidaymakers

Didn't find your answer?

Client has included receipts for chocolates, flowers and small Christmas gifts. I'm very mindful to disallow but just want to double check so I'm 100% correct if he questions it.

I can confirm that of the two available options you have selected the wrong one.

Could you explain why please? The nearest equivalent I can find is business gifts to clients and food and drink are disallowable

I went to a conference last week, and week had lunch laid on with wine, they gave us coffee and biscuits (nice biscuits, not just the McVities staple) and there were even sweets on the table.

From the conference centre's point of view, do you think that is disallowable entertainment?

I don't because the conference would have been a hell of a lot cheaper without those things. The way I see it, I damned well paid for them.

Likewise, if your client is running his business properly, the holidaymakers paid for all those things that made their holiday feel all nice and fluffy.

If you were a hotel and you bought chocolates , champagne and roses to be left in a guest's bedroom on Valentines day, would you disallow all costs?

It is surely not a gift but part of the service offered, cost of sales, so to speak.
