'Minister for Brexit' Oliver Letwin gave evidence to a parliamentary hearing yesterday and started talking about gap analysis - ie what we need to know about the UK's exit from Europe versus what we actually know.
Some swear by gap analysis, while others feel it is used in meetings when a) they need to buy time or b) they don't know the answer. Has anyone used this technique? Is it effective or a waste of everyone's time?

Well, if one were to do a gap analysis between the old aweb and the new aweb, the list would be quite extensive. But it would be totally ignored, so the answer to the question is that it is a waste of everyone's time.
I know that the French company Southern Rail (Govia) run an absolutely diabolical service. Is that what you mean?
I come from a software background and when we took on a new client the first job was a gap analysis, to see what did they do in the business that our software did not do. That then formed the basis for the next step of deciding what modifications we would add in. I guess its virtue is it limits the scope to what is really needed, which is good unless you are in an environment where you want or need to do something new.
Gap Analysis seems to be something I've been doing for years without knowing it actually had a name.
