Getting clients

Advice on getting clients

Didn't find your answer?

Hi Everybody,

I am wanting some advice on getting clients for my new accountancy practise. I am going to start cold calling next week to offer prospects two months free accountancy and to hopefully make an appointment. I am also printing some flyers which I will distribute and slowly starting to network. I understand referals and word of mouth generates business but I need my first clients to see these work. Any advice on marketing, advertising, cold calling or anything to help me get clients will be a huge help.

Tom

It's a long hard slog building a book of business. Your two months free offer will appeal to start ups and the serial bouncers, but established business won't leave their existing relationships for this.

When trying to get work, you need to ask yourself who you want to be and who you want to work with and then look at what appeals to that market.

If you're in survival mode and willing to take anything, concentrate on the transactional, the quick turnaround and the easy to get. I'd look at CIS contractors, taxi drivers and the basic self employed.

This won't build a book (they're not consistent enough) but it'll pay some bills whilst you get going.

Consider also subcontracting for other small firms - not to nick their clients, that'll just get you a very bad rep - but to pay the bills and watch how they organise themselves.

Good luck

Good quality website.

Not really to get random hits/searches but more to create professional presence and probably useful to point prospective clients to it if it displays your skills. e.g.topical articles / analysis of tax points etc.

Having said above I do not have one yet but I do not currently want more clients (unless really interesting/ above average fee) as my practice is part time and I have to fit it around the day job.

Possibly later this year this may change (want to go part time) and I have already written a fair bit of draft copy to prepare for a launch of a two days, evenings and weekend practice rather than existing evenings and weekends practice.

I have spent hours looking at the websites of other firms and getting ideas, if not done well worth doing-also you may get firmer view re fee charging by the opposition re those who give guidance.
