Hacked off HMRC call centre staff

Didn't find your answer?

"This letter was sent in July and you still haven't replied. My wife could of had a baby and then some in that time."

She wasn't too happy at that one...

From Mr Pedant

It's not "My wife could of had a baby.....", it's "My wife could have had a baby.....". If accountants can't master English grammar what hope is there for civilisation as we know it.

On a serious note, I really don't know what we can do about the way HMRC deals with our post. I am still waiting for a reply to a letter sent in early February. "Six weeks? Is that all?", I here you say. I guess I am expecting too much.

It seems to be the major complaint on the part of agents. I can't understand why they won't use emails; they even seem reluctant to use faxes.

Is it of any use to complain to our MPs? I wouldn't have thought so. I suppose we will just have to live with it.

@SteveOH

Some senior HMRC staff are allowed external email addresses, for example Tax Inspectors.  I have a variety of HMRC contacts with email addresses relating to a large company I work for, but I can tell you that it doesn't necessarily help - emails are just as easy to ignore as snail mail!!

.

I'll be honest, I dossed English lessons at school, hence the poor grammar and general grasp on the English language. It was only when I met my wife that I learnt the "I was, you were" and when to use an or a. I put it down to being a brummie.

Good news, I got a call back from HMRC regarding the letter and the woman was apologetic and said "it was handled very unprofessionally." Told her to call the client and tell her the same, it's her who has waited for the response and has been worrying about her financial stiuation. At least it is sorted, even if wife's womb was needed to make the point...

Don't worry, we understand - birmingham city fans have never been the quickest learners, you will get there eventually :-)

Sorry, Clegganator

I hear "Could of..." and "Would of..." a lot down here in London; it drives me round the bend:)

I lived in Brum for 10 years until recently and I am going back as soon as possible. The people that I met there were the friendliest I've ever met. My wife and her family were all Birmingham City fans so I stubbornly started supporting the Villa. They still carried on talking to me!!
