HMRC Access code texts

Didn't find your answer?

I have a self assessment client whose own phone is linked to their account. I want to log in to their HMRC self assessment to complete their tax return but I will have to ask them to forward the access code which they may not be able to do at that exact moment. How do agents get around this problem?

Proper agents have their own agent logins so they don't need to login as the client to complete a tax return.

I get my clients to send me their mobile phone with their tax return information, and I do not give it back until they have paid my fee. Works like a charm!

You can still fill in their return using HMRC's software if you log in through your agent credentials. Why do you think they will send the client a code in those circumstances? I have never been asked for a code when I pretend to be filling one in to access some details.

HMRC have a dislike of agents using client GG IDs to access their tax data and deal with tax obligations (be it SA return filing as in this case or trying to resolve PAYE demands).

To enforce this HMRC policy 2SV was introduced earlier this year - 2 step verification, as you have found out this can involve an access code sent to a linked mobile phone.

So, to get round this here are two practical solutions which I hope are useful:

EITHER complete the SA return with the client sitting next to you with their fully charged switched on mobile phone ready to receive the code

OR (more professionally) have the client added to your agent account with HMRC

OR you could do like me and get all your clients to send you their mobile phones to save them sitting next to you!
