Interesting to note that the HMRC online PAYE year end submissions facility is unavailable for the period from 04 April 2011 to 06 April 2011 due to "routine maintenance". A very suitable time for those out there who like to get their payroll year ends out of the way promptly at the tax year end. Can anyone suggest a reason for such excellent planning?

HMRC
I normally understand and defend HMRC on this.
Not today this is the most daft times to do routine
Thanks again for HMRC understanding the pressure we are under at this time of year -
It has to be done .. .
. . . to enable them to update their systems for the new year, and I understand that there is some legal barrier to them making the software available before 6 April.
I really can't see that not being able to submit the payroll on 4 or 5 April is a big deal at all, when you have weeks left to sort it out.
There's a greater concern for people who have to file VAT returns by 7 April but even they will have two full days left to file, and HMRC won't issue penalties if it is one or two days late because the systems have been down.
But...
I already filed some last week so this can't possibly be the case.
Yet another inspired piece of planning by HMRC
Worth The Wait
We all will benefit from a system that's working well so I think a few days downtime for planned maintenance isn't such a bad deal.
We have to cut HMRC some slack from time to time.
It's the same every year...
...I think. The system, doesn't let you do P11D's etc. before the actual year end, and when it comes back up all the new tax year stuff will (usually) be there. Not a problem.
You already filed some last week . . .
. . for the year 2011-12? I think not.
And the legal block on making the software available applies to self assessment.
Why?
"You already filed some last week . . .
. . for the year 2011-12? I think not."
I assume it was for 2010-2011. Why did you suggest 2011-2012?
