HMRC Questionnnaire

My client had not submitted any of his self assessment tax returns.  Finally he got around to filing the outstanding returns in 2010.  We had confirmation for some shortly after but for others we heard nothing from HMRC.  Recently (2 years after we had made the original submission) we received a letter from HMRC asking us to complete a questionnaire and tick a box that best describes why we decided to submit the returns.

The options are :

Accountancy or professional advice

Trade contacts

National publicity

Local publicity

The letter states it is to help improve their compliance procedures.  Has anyone else recevied such a letter? Is this a prelude to an investigation?

Why not..........

........ file in bin?

I presume there is no statutory obligation to reply. If there was, it would be stated in the letter, I would have thought.

Was it addressed to your or

Was it addressed to you or your client? My client under investigation received one of these, which HMRC were using it as a precurser to calculating penalties. The answer we suggested for him was accountancy advice. This wasn't queried.

I suggest you don't ignore it without querying as to why it was sent
