Hosting a fund raising event

Entertaining or Deductible?

Didn't find your answer?

Hi all,

My new client hosts a charity golf day each year for its clients. The day has always been treated as entertaining and I agree with this, but the client is querying if the aspect of charity means there is any scope for the expenditure being deductible.

Expenditure for the day includes:

  • Rental of the golf course and club house for the day
  • Food for clients on arrival
  • Hiring out golf buggys
  • providing prizes for the charity raffle - these are often alcohol or signed photos (a sizeable donation is required to enter the raffle which is donated to charity)
  • Evening meal and drinks
  • Gift bags for clients with company logo.

Around £2,000 - £3,000 which comes from the raffle donations and also the £20 entry fee per person.

Gift aid the cost of the event to charity. Get the charity to run the event, and have it 'sponsored by ABC Ltd'.

Seriously - client spends £8k - £10K to donate £2 - £3K to a charity!

Just give £8K - £10K to the charity - if client is an individual than gift aid it as mrme89 has said.
