How long to get UTR?

How long to get UTR?

Didn't find your answer?

I have a couple of new self-employed clients who need to file tax returns for the 2013/14 tax year. They have not yet informed HMRC that they needed to file a 2013/14 tax so don't have UTRs yet.

We are now almost a couple of months past HMRC's deadline of 5/10/14 for notifying them that a return is required, but almost a couple of months before the 31/1/15 deadline, so I'm doing online registrations now, hoping UTR's will arrive before 31/1/15.

Can anyone comment on how long HMRC are currently taking to issue a new UTR when the application is made online?

Thanks in advance.

30 days

I think you have 30 days from the Notice to file a tax return in any case.  And penalties for failure to notify are tax geared based on tax outstanding at 31 Jan.

Payment on account?

So would it be possible to make a payment on account by 31/1/15 without a UTR to avoid this?

3 months to do

You get 3 months from the date of notice to do the tax return.

Chances are you will get the notice in the next 4 - 6 weeks (early - mid Jan 2015)

You have 3 months from that date to submit your return.

Not sure if you need to pay any tax due by 31 January or you get same 3 month period to pay. If you dont pay by 31 January you will only have interest and/or surcharges to pay anyway.

Thanks all for comments... I spoke to HMRC yesterday re. payments on account without UTR - the rep I spoke to advised against it as they apparently wouldn't be able to allocate it against anything

@fawltybasil2575 great idea -

@fawltybasil2575 great idea - I didn't think that it would be possible using the NI number but that sounds like a good plan!

@carl

Fawltybasils advice is spot on.

In my experience best to send a cheque with a letter and put info on back of cheque to ie Client Name address NI no and a phone number.  In letter tell them it is to cover 2013-4 Tax Liabillity.  Send it to Bradford
