Life Saving as a sport

Life Saving as a sport

Didn't find your answer?

Since when is life saving a sport?  When it is through a not-for-profit organisation!

Just been reading 3.2 of Notice 701/45 and under the list of sports recognised by HMRC (amongst other things... Octopush anyone?) is 'Life Saving' (plus 'Surf Life Saving').

How is that a sport?  Anyone have a client who holds life saving competitions?

A first

I think you might be the first person to complain about an exemption from VAT! :-)

Is golf a sport?

If so, why isn't darts?

Darts...

... is recognised as a sport by the Sports Council, so a darts club could qualify as a CASC.

Apparently darts are not

(lifted from a CCH newsletter by Neil Warren)

"But what exactly is sport when it comes to deciding if VAT exemption might apply? Is darts included as a sport (no), snooker (yes), tchoukball (yes, even though I haven’t a clue what it is) and football matches involving Arsenal? I’ll have to think about the last one … possibly OK but only just!"

When it is done competitively?

Octopush is hard, supposedly underwater hockey but more like underwater rugby in with fins, masks and  a lead puck.

Surf life saving is very serious in Australia, but also popular in SouthWest UK, we happpened to be in Bourmouth last September when the UK championships were on.

I can imagine

How surf life saving would be a very valuable skill, but as a competitive discipline?  Do they drown a few people then race to see who can resussitate them first?

my own off the cuff differentiation between sports and shall we

is where in physical fitness leads to better results - in darts and snooker it could be argued that the reverse is true - but being a nation of overweight couch potatoes - we have recognised more ganes as sports  and the runner up in the sports personality of the year was none other than Mr Taylor
