Mandatory PM course

ICAS

Didn't find your answer?

Does your professional body mandate that you attend a training course that they provide (and charge for)?  ICAS have a new PM course that they want all practioners to attend once every 5 years.  While that isn't a huge ask, its over £100 to attend and I will have to travel over 100 miles each way to attend and the content isnt great.

This is one of the courses.

Do the other professional bodies have similar requirements?

No, ICAEW send some busy-bodies round every few years but I generally just waste half a day dealing with them.

What do they teach you ? Sucking eggs ?

I'd be asking why it's abroad. Scotland not good enough for the ICAS ?

Edinburgh is also available, as is London.

I suspect the direct delivery is a legacy of ICAS being more a direct teaching provider to its students/ trainees, certainly more so than the other institutes.

There are a number of locations. I'm based in Yorkshire so none of the locations are easy. Most will involve 3 + hours of travel which I'm not desperate to do. I was just curious if any other professional body forced their members to attend something similar.

And what finer place could you be based ?

I have to say that I've been up to Durham on courses before. Takes about an hour and a half from our house so three hours round trip is about right.

Hardly an onerous obligation if you only have to attend once every 5 years.

I have been to both the last two PM courses and picked up useful information from both.

I just see it as CPD work plus gets me out of the office for the day.
