Moderators - Late to the party

Didn't find your answer?

Is there any value in moderators closing a thread that nobody has contributed to for several days? It just makes the moderation team look slack.

Thanks for the question CC. Admittedly we were a little slow in closing this one down after it swerved off topic (little fleet joke for you there), but threads like these sometimes linger on as those who don't visit the site regularly revisit their comments, and there seemed little purpose in allowing it to do so.

All the best,

Tom

While you there Tom, is there anything to update, as regards the Aweb site? Ben's last update (number 6) was 19th August 2016 and, from the content, it gave the impression that further work was ongoing.

One of my biggest gripes is the re-introduction of the anonymous facility. Accepting that many of us use avitars, for a variety of reasons, surely that's sufficient anonymity for any member who's signed up to the facility? Profiles simply provide a trail back to the member and, over time , can provide "background".

It's more than apparent that, since the site "update" on 3rd May 2016, there's been an increase in the "freeloader" type enquiry, on any answers and, whilst we can always ignore these questions, it's quite obvious that many of the seasoned professionals are seriously fed up with it.

"Some annoyance" appears to be typical British understatement.

More British understatement, or to be precise maybe more typically quintessential English understatement, remove the "some" to express real outrage.

I as one who is of part Scots pedigree , possibly a more romantic/ passionate people but who nevertheless are prone to calling a spade a spade and telling it as is, would be modifying my descriptive to something more akin to "incandescent, rage, fury and venom" instead of merely "annoyance"

You could have said "quite annoying". In British English, it means "not very annoying", but in American English, it means "very, very annoying" - and we do seem to be an American site now!

Your example is a prime example of the quote attributed to Shaw,

"The United States and Great Britain are two countries separated by a common language"

I have the Trump/Clinton debate recorded for tonight's edification where I expect there will be more evidence of the above proposition.

Thanks Red Kite, and good to see you using that 'edit' button.

Yes, there still is plenty of work going on behind the scenes. The development team have fixed a lot of the 'low hanging fruit' ie bugs, and are now working on speeding up the site and number of other longer-term plans. Will ask Ben for an update to provide more details.

I will also submit the anonymous query to the powers that be and report back my findings.

Apologies I can't be more specific with either of those things. All the best,

Tom

Anon is a good functionality. From my perspective, it has limited the FT bashing.

I have edited this post to take out the Google search term to find First Tab.

Despite him making himself very easy to find, I have taken removed my post at the wishes of the moderators.

It isn't a great function at all. You would have to have a short memory to forget the issues (troll posts etc) which went before, on this site. There were some quite evil posts, allegedly from anons.
As regards the FT bashing, I'm sorry to have to say - you bring a great deal on yourself, in the style and tone of some of your content. It doesn't seem to matter whether; we know who you are, or we (supposedly) don't!
I don't usually take part in this type of criticism but, I'm sorry, as regards the anon feature, you're way out of order.

Because you've only stated that his value to you personally. Those objecting (which includes me) to the revival of anon thinks it harms the community as a whole. It has in the past been used to abuse other members and by less scrupulous business people to hide the fact they are seeking full service accountancy support on the cheap.

Subject to revealing information about ourselves, we are all anonymous behind our pseudonyms anyway. Can you come up with a reason for a further layer of anonymity beyond your own personal, and wholly self-centred, desire to deflect criticism?

You're given the opportunity to "fix" some of your issues and bluntly and immaturely respond as you have.

For goodness sake FT - man up!

No you won't expand or no you can't give a reason?

Looking at it from the other side, you have repeatedly made a point of saying you ignore posts from me. The fact that all posts from me are in my name allows you to make that choice. By posting anonymously, you deny me the same choice when it comes to your questions. Shouldn't we all have an equal ability to choose who we engage with (and, subject to the site rules, how) and who we don't?

I have narrowed it down.

I believe you are the reincarnation of Old Grey Accountant or Penguin Lady.

Am I correct?

I feel like I have been in Mr Kenyon's English lesson ... "no, Cheeky" and then hit with a ruler.

I thought I had you almost figured out.

Penguin lady. That person with a fat penguin as their profile image.

I miss ShirleyM.
She went across to the "other side" - UK Business Forum - when the site was downgraded (don't tell John, he tends to take the huff).
Not heard from Portia (Norma's [***]) lately either?

So there Cheeky you're still no wiser as to who the raptor could be. Beautiful bird though, sleek, intelligent with a killer instinct.
