Does this mean that the launch of MTD could be delayed

It appears that, as well as considering the question of diesel, MTD has also fallen foul of the rules surrounding election purdah.

Personally, I think that introducing it as a mandatory issue is some 10-20 years too soon.

The election is 6 weeks away. If there's a will to push the current start dates through, it'll be done.

There's no-one with any sense still working at HMRC.

Or, indeed, Parliament.

Do not disagree.

One would have thought someone would have thought, all this Brexit uncertainty, vat rules re services/goods transactions with the EU might well require changes, lets give those individuals who run business, provide employment, in effect give us all these nice taxes, a little breathing space, they probably have enough on their plate already.

The whole debacle re change this, change that, surely has to mean a reduction in productivity, if smaller traders are dealing with admin they are not earning money on which they pay taxes.

Maybe they consider that all the extra work that will be needed by accountants, and the extra sales of the software houses, will make up the difference, but I doubt they have even thought through the economic impact of MTD transition, their timing stinks.

At a time of transition, when they ought to be letting the economy cope with things, they appear to want even more regulation and compliance.

Seems strange, swathes of people voted to leave the EU as they felt EU regulation was stifling their business activities, never fear, our own government is stepping up to the plate to fill the void.

I despair.

Cutting Red Tape was an election pledge, was it not?

The fundamental problem here is HMRC's "incomplete" (that's a nice way of saying 'not an effing clue') grasp on the psychology of the average self employed joe.

Accountants, and just about anyone else with half a brain cell, know that Mr Average Entrepreneur sees self employment as an opportunity to earn a better quality of crust but with the trade off of some compulsory bookkeeping.

The Revenue in the other hand appear to believe that everyone is simply gagging for the chance to maintain world class books of account with the optional extra of doing the odd bit of business when it can be fitted in around the edges.
