P35 Penalty Notices

Just received in the post today a penalty notice for £100 for a client whose P35 was filed on 21 May 2012.

I know the deadline was 19 May 2012, but in the past, so long as it was filed by 26 May, no penalty notices were issues. I thought there was a 7 day grace period for filing the P35....was I wrong?

Because 19 May fell on a Saturday, is that a reasonable excuse that it could not be filed, and was filed on Monday 21 May 2012?

I think I am cluthing at straws....

Yes, you are clutching at straws

19th May means up to midnight on 19th May.

Oh! I love Paula's comment!

I posted that I seemed to recall a press release saying that the 7 days grace was no longer available and then realised that was what the previous post said anyway....

Could have been filed on 19th May

The fact that a filing deadline (19th May) falls on a weekend (or bank holiday) seems irrelevant given that the filing is made electronically - unless there's evidence that HMRC's online services were out of commission that day.
