My client teaches and receives an income as a self employed person following his retirement and completes a tax return form. He claims on this his normal business expenses, but starting to receive this income he also has taken on various voluntary roles that incur expenses that he is not reimbursed for. Had he not been in this new profession he would not have taken on this role and my thought is that he can claim these additional expenses against his self-employed income?
Any thoughts are most welcome

Not in the course of trade
Volunteering costs are not deductible against income generated elsewhere and if not reimbursed by the charity(ies) are borne by the volunteer.
Any equitable charity would reimburse volunteer expenses, some volunteers choose not to claim them but that doesn't mean they can offset them elsewhere.
His new profession status is irrelevent.
