Question about Christmas party allowance

Question about Christmas party allowance

Didn't find your answer?

I work for a hotel type of business where in the run up to Christmas there is never a night when all the staff can get together for our own Christmas function.

Can we still claim the £150 allowance if we have two functions - one on a Wednesday night for most of the staff and one on a Thursday for the staff who had to work on the Wednesday? Nothing big here, just pay for their meal and a few drinks in a restaurant. No-one is allowed to attend both though!

Do both functions not need to be open to all employees to qualify?

As "no one is allowed to attend both" then think that would exclude them.

I took account of this

"If your workforce is organised into separate departments, then separate parties held for each department can also qualify for the exemption - as long as each of your employees will be entitled to attend one of the events."

Strictly speaking we are not talking about departments but I feel that HMRC would accept this.

I agree with Peter...

... it's one event (that all staff are entitled to attend), but organised over two evenings.
