Returning to practice

Returning to practice

Didn't find your answer?

I have worked as a FD in major organisations for many years and I have just returned from a two year sabattical and am in my early fifties.  I am considering running a small practice from home, providing accounting and tax services to SME's, but it is a while since I have been involved in SME taxation, whether it be SA, partnership or small corporations.  Can anyone offer advice as to where I can find a short tax course for people like me who are returning to practice.  I am looking for a three or four day course that will give me what I need to bring me up to date and introduce me to new HMRC sytems and requirements.

Thank you

Please don't feel offended.  You are obviously very good at your job by virtue of having work as an FD for many years but are you certain that a three or four day course will be sufficient to bring your knowledge back to a point where you will be able to offer tax advice to SME businesses.  Only you can answer this as only you know your current knowledge and where any gaps might be.

For tax CPD I have used 2020 and Mercia in the past and both offer good quality courses that can help bring your knowledge back to where you would want it to be.

Alternatively you could look at the ATT qualification.  I did this several years ago at it will certainly give you good working knowledge for dealing with tax issues around SMEs.  If you think this is a little overkill then you could order the text books at work through them to help bring your knowledge back up to date.

Good luck with the new venture.
