Sage job costing module. Thoughts?

Sage job costing module. Thoughts?

Didn't find your answer?

I have got a client who we provide the accounts office function. He is currently looking at various aspects of his business & the profitability of jobs, customers & products. The company currently uses Sage & I note that there is a job costing module avaliable which appears to enable me to complete this reporting. There was a thread a year ago recommending other options but I like the idea built in option as I want it to be the easiest option for my junior collegues to use. Has anyone used this module & can you give me feedbaks please?

Sage Job Costing is not a module but a separate program that links together with Sage 50 Accounts.

Sage 50 Accounts Plus and Professional both have an inbuilt Projects module which provides job control features. This module allows you set up projects and assign them to customers. Sales, purchase, bank and product transactions are entered as normal in Sage and can be coded to individual projects. You can not code journals to projects but the module does allow additional charges and credits to be added to projects. You can see an example of the Projects module in the Sage 50 Accounts demo data company.

We have clients who use the Projects module but if the client has a lot of projects and/or employees it can be time consuming to record employee time costs against projects.

One advantage of Job Costing is that employee time is entered through timesheets which can be link directly to Sage Payroll. Job Costing has more job control features but Sage have not updated it in recent years so it does look a bit 'out of date'.

Hi

Hi

I use project costing for quite a few clients and I also train clients how to use it.   Sage project reports are good they do show the profit on each project and categorys and sources and Departments there are loads of ways to this.

It would be helpful if you could give us more details on what you are trying to achieve.  I think I was part the thread you were talking about as I got a lot of enquiries afterwards. This may have been another thread you are referring though.

My clients have been very happy with and like that is part of the accounts package .

I am on the Sage user Group  and JKnight is right.  At the present moment it would appear sage will not be updating the Job costing as the feed back in the user groups is that they should improve the project costing reports.   Sage 2013 has quite a few improved reports in general.

Kind Regards Sarah Douglas     Douglas Accountancy & Bookkeeping Services Glasgow

Inflexible and ancient

I have the great misfortune of having had to use Sage Job Costing a couple of employments ago.

I suspect in certain cases it probably represents a reasonably priced, adequate solution...

But in my one (and hopefully only) experience of it, it was even more rigid and frustrating than Sage Accounts.

Don't expect too much of it and you'll probably be impressed, but don't go trying to adapt it to your business otherwise you'll start pulling your hair out.

SJC is responsible for the most frustrating eleven months of my career to date. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, but I'm sure others (as above) have had better experiences than I.

I believe Sage dropped it over ten years ago? bar Sage Support. Which explains why it looks and acts so.

I tried to find other users of it (including posting queries here) but ran into a brick wall, though you appear to have already had more luck than I did!

Best of luck with it.

(The alternative that I prefer is using the Ex Ref box to enter job codes on Sage and then exporting all data via csv to pivot tables in Excel, or writing reports for use via the Excel Add-ins. Though depending on your knowledge of these, this may not be an option for you.)
