Hi
I've been running the year end process (including backups). I have no errors reported when the data is checked. I set the date to 31/3 which is our year end. I cleared down the audit trail to the end of the prevous year. Now I'm running the year end.
A box has opened up which is entitled "Open Files" and within that is "Waiting to open file DEPARM.DTA" with the pacifier beneath it. The pacifier creates it's green blocks up to the end of the pacifier and then begins again for this file. In other words, I'm not getting past this to complete the year end process.
Can anybody tell me what is happenning and what I need to look at and/or do to complete the year end, please?

Waiting to open...
Generally this occurs if the file in question is being held open for some reason.
Is the data stored on a network drive or is it local?

Locked file
In which case it would appear that the server is holding a lock on the file. Few options:
1. Wait until it unlocks.
2. If your data is on a dedicated sever, although I've not used one, there are tools available that allow files to be 'unlocked'
3. Reboot both the PC you are using and the server albeit this would require you to crash out of Sage half way through the year end process so you may need to restore a backup...

Server Reboot not totally necessary...
There is a feature within the ADMINISTRATION TOOLS on the Server which will allow you to close any open files. You must use this with caution however. If you already commited yourself to restoring a Sage backup and redoing your end of year routine, then I would suggest that you do the following:-
1. Ensure that you have a backup to go to first!
2. Close Sage on your PC and ensure that all instances of sage are closed from within Task Manager
3. Check the server, or get your IT Dept to check the server for the Manage Open Files Feature Listed in the Action Column on Server 2008 (This is held under ADMINISTRATION TOOLS>SHARE AND STORAGE MANAGEMENT>MANAGE OPEN FILES option) For other servers I can't exactly remember the location, but it's all under the Administration Menu in Control Panel.
4. Look through the list of open files and find any that reference YOUR computer and Sage.
5. Highlight these individual files and close them.
CAUTION - Closing opened files or files that are locked COULD damage them, so please ensure that you are closing the correct files and ensure that you can restore a backup, or at least check the data integrity before commencing.
This will save the need for rebooting the server.
