SEO and duplicate content + Copy writer?

I have a template website. This means till I get around to writing some unique content, it has duplicate content. As more and more accountants are buying template website and not changing the wording, there is more and more duplicate content. This is not a reflection on template website provider, it is a reflection on me for not changing some of wording (apart from tax side).

My understanding is that Google likes fresh unique content. Does having duplicate content affect my website's Google ranking? Does Google penalise websites with duplicate content?

Also I am looking for a reasonably priced copy writer to write my website content. I cannot see me getting round to do this. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Look overseas...

Why not try Odesk and People per hour. You can hire Indian and Filipino MBA's to write articles on business, finance and tax that fly through copyscape for a few dollars per hour.

Will the quality of English be ok

I am sure the quality of actual article will suffice, but without wishing to sound in any way disrespectful to anyone who is not a native English speaker; will the quality of written English be good enough?

Hello, yes in my experiance of both the website I used for my former practice and in the websites I now run, the quality of the English is better than my own... but I suppose that doesn't take much! ;-)  And before anyone asks, no I am not prepared to link to my sites for that will give away far too many secrets!!!! :-)

Thanks Leo I will email you.

Steve thanks. I will look into Odesk. I have also used elance for power point slides. Great work was done. You have open my mind about using one of these for copy writing.  Did not think earlier about this..

On SEO

Is there way I can find out what are the most used searched terms used on Google when people are looking for an accountant?

Is SEO for Dummies one of the better books on SEO for non SEO people like me?

Thanks

Odesk and elance generally have a good quality people, In addition, they also have verified reviews from people who have asked for work to be done.

@FirstTab

Re your SEO questions: Google Traffic Estimator might be a good place to start to get an idea of the most searched for keywords.

Re the SEO book, I cannot comment I'm afraid but generally speaking the "for dummies" books are good enough to get you started (and I am certain that with the amount of people in the SEO industry, they must have found someone who knows their stuff).

SEO for Dummies = good and a Mini-guide

Hi FirsTab,

(Disclosure - my company builds websites, helps companies/practices with their messaging and advises on SEO.)

The search crawlers won't particularly care about your duplicate content unless your site was linking to many sites with the same content, and then you would be in danger of being thought of as a server farm.  Some SEO tools generate lots of shadow sites with duplicate content and link back to fool the crawler in to thinking your site is more important than it actually is.  Google have changed the algorithm to demote people who try to do that.  However, the basic thing is that you need fresh content on your site on a regular basis.  I'd recommend starting a blog for that very reason (or hiring someone to do content as you have in mind).

SEO is a movable feast.  Google changes the algorithm on a regular basis, but the basics of SEO still hold true.  SEO for Dummies is actually an excellent place to start - I recommend all of my customers spend £15 on it and learn the basics before they talk to any, so called, SEO expert.

I would also recommend you get hold of Google's Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide.  I've written a free companion to that called "Search Engine Optimization Mini Guide - 15 Top Tips - It's not a black art and it's not rocket science"  If you want a copy, just mail me at dt at d2c dot org dot uk.  I hope that helps.
