It seems the AWeb development team are either oblivious or just do not care about the issue with the show more button and the unecessary scrolling it causes, so I thought I'd post a link to a video I made of me trying to scroll through my answers to posts to try to find a post I made a month or so ago.
There is no sound to the video, but you can all just use your imaginations...

For the avoidance of doubt, all scrolling by me was in a southerly direction.

OK - we get the point - you post a lot of replies!
What do you want - a pat on the back?
Or will Thanks do?
OK, that's a pain. But on the plus side we no longer have the problem of scrolling down a thread & arriving unbidden in a completely different thread. So things are not as bad as they once were .....

It is depressing that this is the closest we can come to feeling positive about the site layout these days. So things are not as bad as they once were .....
Portia, while you wait for AW's response, try this.

Click "Answers"
You'll find that "Show More" works as you'd expect.
Good workaround, but why the heck doesn't it work that way everywhere?Portia, while you wait for AW's response, try this.

Now I am confused again - where can you look at your posts to get this error? I thought the only way to look at answers was the way through the profile page
Thanks for that Portia. This issue is a new one to us. I've flagged it to our developers and should hopefully have an answer soon - will keep you posted.
In the meantime I would recommend the solution outlined by emanresu below.
Best wishes,
Tom
Above! (or northwards) This cold medicine is messing with my head...
This AWful upgrade is messing with ALL our heads, Tom.
It originally was below, but because of the way the site now deals with 'respond' - it is now above! Hilarious, you couldn't make this [***] up!
"Good workaround, but why the heck doesn't it work that way everywhere? "
Because software writers are fallible! It is a common failure that when software is "upgraded" the multiple ramifications of changes are missed out - hence my search for an alternative path to Portia's replies. The same thing happened with the Edit button - and so a similar work-around was devised and used here until the site caught up.
There's plenty more still to fix!
Imagine doing your job as say a 'tax adviser'....proceeding with some advice which 'upgrades' the clients tax position, without considering ALL ramifications. Geez...even a 4 year old learns quicker than the idiots in charge of this website as to the potential multiple consequences of their actions...it seems the new motto in technology is 'why use one click when you could use several and throw in several scrolls too'...(not quite as sleek as it was in my head)...
I wouldn't worry about robots taking jobs of us...whilst their are humans in charge of the programming of those robots they will always do stupid things without considering the consequences.
Some time ago the U.S. government attempted to work out why over 98% of their software contracts came in late, over budget and not functioning to specification. They studied the contractors' staff concerned, normalising for everything they could think of - and still found that apparently equally qualified staff had a capability ratio of 200 to 1.
Imagine the same ratio in the surgeon performing your forthcoming heart surgery!

Which is why you software developers engage in proper testing before launching their software.
Yes, bugs can slip through testing. In all but the simplest systems it is impossible to test everything in a sensible period of time. The problem is that the site change appears to have been launched with no testing at all. We are SEVEN months into the change. The fact that we are still dealing with ridiculous problems like this that still need workarounds speaks volumes.

Software upgrades rarely address the original structure, they just add/correct local functionality. After a while, what was meant to be a block of flats becomes a pile of bungalows.
Software testing tends to be done by those who write it. They tend to test what they know they can test in order to get the confirmation they want.
These two facets guarantee what has happened with AW, what happens when Banks update their software, what happens when HMG updates its software.
Anything being done about the 'show more replies' button on threads? Still makes no sense to me why anyone would want to see only the first 5 replies as default.
Also it's still a pain in the [***] trying to find new responses. The shiny orange 'new' icon helps on short threads, but on multi-pagers it means scrolling through each page because you have no idea which page the new response is on.
Maybe Ben Smith can address this in his next update. So circa June 2018.
So many issues have been spotted and reported so far since the upgrade!
I told Sift not to use a part-time web builder off People per Hour.
Wow Portia. I don't post that much stuff but I can see how that can be very annoying. There are a lot of places on the site where it jumps back to the top which is a bit more than irritating. Nice work around though emanresu.
You really are an ungrateful bunch.
You easily forget that, some time ago now, John wanted a new "like" icon https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/any-answers/help-us-pick-the-right-like-...
Whinge whinge that's all some people live for.
Can't believe so many of you have clicked a link from Portly. Your computers are now at his(her?) behest!
