Smartphone apps

Smartphone apps

Didn't find your answer?

Having spent the weekend trialling the Drivesafe.ly app (review to follow), which reads your emails and SMS texts aloud whilst you drive, I'm curious if there are any other apps that help you manage your day-to-day activities?

It's much more fun ...

... reading texts at 90mph 3 foot from the car in front!

Seriously, I can't think of any text/e-mail that couldn't wait until I was parked somewhere. Regardless of whether you are reading or being read to you are being distracted and it is not a good idea.

As a luddite I cynically view "Apps" (the very word makes me cringe) as just another way to screw money out of people unnecessarily.

Belay that thought, I've just had a money spinning idea! I could market it as a bogof, the 02 app, one to tell you when to breathe in, one to tell you when to breathe out. That leads on to a whole family of other bodily function apps...

Or, cut out the middleman - just whip out your brain at birth and replace it with a smartphone, now, where could we put the battery, hmmm...?

Toodledo

Love Toodledo on my desktop and as an app. It is so easy to keep track of all client deadlines with this.

Couldn't agree more OGA

My life is better managed by not wasting any time researching tens of thousands of apps all of which will claim to enhance my life.

Madness

I do hope none of my loved-ones are near you when your driving along listening to your text and SMS messages. You cannot concentrate properly on your driving when you are doing this. Is your life really so very busy that this is the only time you have to deal with them? Please reconsider using this crazy app.

Siri and iPhone 4s performs similar....

Yes it is new and gimmicky but the new Iphone with its "digital assistant" (called SIRI) is actually very handy and essentially offers voice activated text dictation, amongst other things.

"You can ask Siri to make a call, find a business and get directions, schedule reminders and meetings, search the web, and more"

Whether or not this adds more distraction to drivers (probably!) is another question. I try not to use it when driving and so far the most useful function has been the new reminders app included with OS5.0.

Well said, Old Greying Accountant, and Andy Partridge.  We need ENGLISH not a load of shortened words, so that we can all understand.  Is it "applications" or "appliances" or something else?  See, we've all got short-term memories now, must be the "chicken generation" out there.

... surely there should be a space between 'Good' and 'English' otherwise it makes no sense - in fact it's very bad English - please ensure it's correct next time.

The GoodEnglish Professor responds

Hi JayBee

I considered separating "Good" from "English" very carefully.  I rejected it, as the emphasis is on GoodEnglish.  You will observe that I use an UpperCase letter in the middle of a word.  The history for that lies when I was behind "White Van Man" who uses all lowercase in their website/email addresses.  You try reading a string of letters.  It's so much easier on the eye to see where one word ends and the next begins.

Smartphones

Too many posts ar knocking the use of a smart phone (even suggesting there is no need for a phone at all)!!.

Let's get back to answering Natalie's actual question - "apps that help you manage your day-to-day activities?"

4 basics are crucial - phone, contacts, calander and email - with the last 3 constantly syncronised with my office computer.

Try for work - Dragon Dictation, CoPilot, Train Times, Google Maps, Notes, Reminders, Google, Dictionary.

And you'll get an insight into my leisure time with - CAMRA Good Beer Guide Mobile, Sky Sports Football, Sky Go, Rugby News, European Tour, PGA Tour, Met Office, View Ranger.

Ludites and old greying accountants should jump into the 21st Century. I agree though, the only one of my apps for use when driving is Co Pilot.

The 21st Century ...

... what a wonderful place to be -

The world economy has spent most of it nose-diving in to oblivion, the world is probably the most turbulent and war torn it has ever been and greed and selfishness have replaced compassion and respect - and that's just scratching the surface: lovely!

I think Shirley's post here says it quite well

How's that saying go, "none so blind ..."
