Sole trader travel expenses

Sole trader travel expenses

Didn't find your answer?

Sole trader is a painter/decorator but has been working a few "larger" jobs in last 2/3 years. In 13/14 he worked at 2 different locations in the year; in 15/16 he worked in 2 different locations; in 16/17 all his work was at one location. In 17/18 he has 2 jobs lined up over the next 6 months but nothing set up beyond that.

Is there enough variety of travel going on here for his travel to and from his work (by car) to be allowable

If he was a PAYE individual and these were temporary workplaces not expected to last over 2 years you would presumably allow them. As the travel costs are not so restrictive for self employed there is more chance of a claim. You really need to expand on the information slightly. There are lots of cases posted and the issue would probably depend on his base of operations

He is not an employee just a straightforward self employed decorator. He does work for builders so operates under CIS deduction.

Most of his work has been at just one or two locations for the last couple of years. I would say the base of his operation was at home but then he travels to wherever the builders want him to paint and decorate.

If he was doing smaller jobs each lasting 4 or 5 weeks I wouldn't even question it but it is the fact that recently the jobs have been larger and taken longer to complete so his journeys have become more predictable whilst each job has been on going.
