Subsistence Claims - Sole trader

My client attends the same 10 trade fairs each year. He sells his product at these trade fairs. This accounts for about 55% of his turnover.

Are the following costs allowable:

Hotels

Mileage

Food

Drinks

I'd be interested in your thoughts. My initial thought is that he can claim mileage and hotels but not subsistence as these trade fairs become his place of business.

Thanks

I'd say all of them

I'd actually say he could claim all these costs, as he's away from home on a business trip.  I wouldn't think he'd be at the trade fairs long enough for them to become his place of business.

Happy to hear others' opinions though?

I would allow all of them

Providing they are reasonable and for one person only.

What about if I said he has a 'unique' diet and buys health foods from tesco to take with him? Would you allow those?

Im not sure what Im getting confused with...I thought there was something about a 'normal ' place of operations....
