Tax Return Enquiries

Didn't find your answer?

A client of mine who previously submitted their own tax returns omitted the dividends they received from their personal company, £25,000, from their 2014 Tax Return. They have recently received a letter from HMRC querying the dividends per the company accounts from 2008 to 2014 with those shown in their tax returns as they do not reconcile. The 2014 Tax Return was filed on 31st January 2015 and the letter from the Revenue is dated 3rd June 2016. Are they not out of time limit to enquire into the return?

Did they actually say they were enquiring? It sounds like they have plenty of evidence for a discovery assessment, so why are you hesitating? Make the case for an honest mistake.

What Tim said, though depending on the year end it is possible that HMRC would find it difficult to reconcile even if everything had been returned.
