Tough Choices

Tough Choices

Didn't find your answer?

Hi guys,

Apologies if this is the wrong area to post this but here I go.

After passing my Law Degree I have been working as a Bookkeeper in an my Father's Accountancy Firm. I decided to do so after realising that Law wasn't really for me. I much prefered the business side of things, such as Finances and Intellectual property. As I have been with the firm since its inception I was named as a director.

I am now looking to expand my horizons and am interested in working for a firm as a trainee accountant (with hopes of becoming an ICAEW member) as my Father's Firm will not enable me to do this (not ICAEW registered) I am looking elsewhere.

The problem is, I feel that being a direcor of a firm already may lead to my CV/App being thrown straight in the bin. I could resign as director but I'm not sure that will make a difference.

What do you guys think?

I would remove Director from your job title on the CV. Whilst it may not put everyone off it will put off a lot of people, who will assume paid lots. won't stay in job why looking etc etc.

Depending on how long you have been working for your father's business and what you have been doing, you could put something like i) Bookkeeper ii) Trainee Accountant iii) Assistant Accountant.

What kind of work have you been doing and for how long? Trainee Accountant would sound better but a firm might wonder why you want another trainee role. Bookkeeper might get you stuck in roles call Bookkeper especially if you start dealing with agencies. Go direct if you can.

Incidentally is your father's firm not regulated/qualified?
