... apart from the usual Sage (too complicated) Iris (too expensive), VT, Quick books there are other less well known ones around e.g Simply books (I have one client using this and is happy).
HMRC list 32 'approved' software providers (admitedly some are just tax return submission providers). Some I've never heard of e.g AJAccounts software, Do you use any of these less well known ones yourself or do any of your clients?

In my experience good apps to suit the very smallest traders are hard to find. I'd particularly like to find a MTD compliant app just to recommend to very small sole-traders (friends) that I don't want / shouldn't need to act for.
I advise Wave Accounting (free) for one-man-band type businesses inc ltd co's that are not VAT registered but it's Canadian and MTD is not on their radar.
I recently signed-up to 1Tap Receipts but this seems to only track expenses and not income - which is a shame. But it looks like it will be MTD compliant.
I use Ftax/Legatio for filing my clients self-assessments. The software is relatively cheap and very easy to use. I have asked them about MTD and they are working on software to comply with quarterly reporting.
Taxfiler produce excellent Tax Return and Accounting packages. They have been very good todate so I suggest you keep an eye on there home page . www.taxfiler.co.uk
I am also looking into accounting packages for smaller clients.
Does anyone use Quickfile?
Would Quickfile work for a small pub (currently using a cashbook) ?
I haven't actually used QuickFile but I did look into it recently. A colleague put in the caveat that if it hasn't been around long it may either disappear or suddenly ramp up its fee structure as soon as it becomes better established. I, too, would be interested to hear from anyone who has used it.
I have a couple of clients that have been using quickfile for a while and its not a bad tool for a free system. Its good when its a relatively basic business model. However as you have suggested they are in the process of increasing their fees I have already had one client locked out unless they start to pay.
Xero non vat cashbook is good and reasonably priced £5+VAT. Though Xero works on bank transaction and not on direct input of income and exps with reference to bank transactions.
Need a wave version of Xero for MTD.
I use QuickFile for several businesses, it is easy to use and understand for small companies and sole traders, also copes with VAT and gives you an up to date estimate of tax liabilities whenever you need it.
Solar accounts. Have a few clients who have used this for several years without making too much of a mess. Now available online.
