VAT exemption from registration on "temporary" grounds

VAT exemption from registration on "temporary"...

Didn't find your answer?

A business temporarily goes over the VAT registration threshold and may be allowed to apply for an exemption from registration. Having asked HMRC for more information I have drawn a blank and been told to write in with full details.

Does anybody have any information or experience regarding how long the “temporary period” is allowed to be before the exemption from registration on these grounds is denied?

Send a letter

I've only done it once and I think it only went over the limit for one or two months and then the business changed to a limited company.

You have to apply for registration but also send a letter giving your reasons why the sales only go over the limit temporarily.

Everything is the same except for the letter so you just have to go ahead with it.

Write a letter with full turnover details
Generally you will need monthly turnover figures for at least 12 months before breached limit and 12 months after the breach (obviously these will often be estimates). And write a narrative if why you went over (one off contract/provided materials as one off) and why it is not likely to happen again and cross your fingers.

I have done it twice and both times it has been accepted, if genuine I have found hmrc very reasonable.

Hi,

I have applied for VAT as reaching threshold, but wish to also apply for exemption. How do I do this? Is there an online form to be filled out?

Thanks,

Stephen
