VAT Online

VAT Online

Didn't find your answer?

Just taken over a case from another accountant.   I submitted paper forms 64-8 a week ago.

The VAT return is due now. I've filled in the online form for authorisation, reg number, postcode, EDR, details of last return.  I've got copies of all the returns so I know they're right but it comes up as "FAILED".

I was just looking for confirmation from someone that this'll be because the 64-8 hasn't been processed yet.   If it is, I can come back to it in a month or two.

Just as an aside, I phoned the Online Services Helplessline 0300 200 3600, listened to some recordings and pressed a few buttons for over two minutes.

"Oh no", the lass said, "you need another helplessline, 200 3701".

Rang that, pushed more buttons, listened to more recordings, spoke to a guy. "Oh no," he said, "we can't help you. We need your 64-8 to be processed."

"Well, go and pull it out of the pile!!"

Hence the query.

Sometimes, it's like the Government don't want your money .....

I'm not sure a paper 64-8 will authorise you for online VAT, I think online authorisation might be required for that, ie your client logs in (or gives you their login info) and adds your agent code on the HMRC site.

In fact it says as much on the 64-8 form at the end of note 2 on the second page.

I had this recently. I had to call them and go through the information to see which was wrong. and they managed to get there system to issue a code to the client.

A paper 64-8 gets you on line for CT and SA but not for VAT which seems odd but that is the system we have.

I seem to remember that when entering the figures nil has to be entered as 0.00 to get it to work.

Call them up if your paper 64-8 is in place they should be able to help you get the code issued to get you on line.

It is frustrating though when deadlines are pending.

The on line submissions are great, when you can get access to it.

Duggimon - you're missing the point. I know the paper form won't get you into online submission. The question is whether the paper form needs to be processed before you can ask to be let into the online version.

Glennzy - Tried 0 and 0.00. Also leaving the space out of the postcode. Makes no odds. And I've rung them up. And got the advice in the original post.
