VT Filer glitch resulting in a late filing penalty

Late filing penalty

Didn't find your answer?

Need advice if I should appeal the penatly.

I submitted accounts before the deadline using VT Filer. Usually I submit and close the file and open next day - Co House sends a reminder if you forget. I did not get an email from Co House on this occasion and missed opening the file again.

2 weeks after the deadline I get a letter from Co House saying I am late filing. Quite surprised I go and reopen the VT submission file - and it is blank.

Not sure if it was VT glitch or Co house but since the VT filer file was blank it will be hard for me to allocate blame to Co house.

Is it worth appealing?

Thanks

Nikolay

No.

I've taken to filing all mine with Companies House software. Then I can blame them if it goes wrong.

I have never had a failed filing at Companies House using VT Filler but the fact that CH do not send me an email acknowledgement means that I cannot be sure that that the filing has been successful

The way I deal with this is to simply check on the Companies House Beta Check service that the Accounts (or any other filings) have been received. In some cases the Accounts file can appear within a few minutes of filing on the Public Register although they are often shown as not yet available to view, but at least this shows they have arrived.

So the procedure here for every filing is to always check that the Accounts have arrived and have eventually been made available to the public. If not, then you know they have been rejected.

In addition, as the brilliant Beta service means that everyone can download copies of most CH Filed documents for free, it is easy to download a copy of the Accounts you filed to see how they look to the Public. You will generally find that the formatting is in HTML style so there are no pages as such. I questioned VT about this and they said that electronic filing was not designed for people to read but has been designed (by the Government) for the information to be readily fed into the CH Computers as data to be sold on.

That is the future.

XBRL accounts from other software certainly comes in pages and formatted properly, so I think the "HTML style" of VT accounts is just a limitation of VT rather than any format imposed by the Government.
