Want to make my website CMS

Want to make my website CMS

Didn't find your answer?

My website currently is not CMS. I am thinking about asking my web designer to make it CMS.

Is there any particular system of CMS I should ask for? I am looking for a system that would be like Word to make changes.

I understand there is Joomla, Wordpress etc

Thanks

For simplicity...
...go for WordPress. Your designer will probably have a favourite platform which they deploy, but with WordPress - unless you want to do really complex content layers - you won't go far wrong. Developing for WordPress is quite inexpensive, too!

WordPress is fine but...

First I have to declare an interest - my firm makes websites for accountants, and I'm part of a software company that develops a low cost CMS aimed at SMEs to build a web presence more affordably than the likes of WordPress and Joomla.

Joomla is a pretty good open source CMS - that means the software is free to use, but someone needs to do some design and development work to give you what you want as well as hosting it.  Joomla has quite a community of developers who build add ons.  In terms of code quality some of them are excellent and some aren't.  You can find good Joomla expertise and make good sites - we've used it ourselves with a great sub-contractor who knew what they were doing.

WordPress is a fantastic blogging platform that many agencies bend in to a CMS for making websites.  It's also "free" for the software.  There is a big community of developers making plug ins and themes, some free, some chargeable, some great, some not.  If you needed to start a blog, the free WordPress.com is a great place to start.  For a more conventional website WordPress can work well, but you'll need an expert or an agency who can do the design and development work hide some of the technical stuff from you and make the site admin straightforward.

There are commercial alternatives that are as good or better, and can give you a more complete and properly integrated web presence with all the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) stuff you need for less money.

The key thing is that you switch to a CMS and choose a partner where YOU are in control of your website.  You should be able to change some words or add a page or a photo or a video  as a non-technician within a few minutes.  These days you shouldn't have to always go back to the agency and pay them every time you need to change even a word.

Would love to give you some more free advice, or help you with the job.  Give me a call if you like.

Freaky

I know this post is going to look kind of freaky, but having possibly worked out who FT is IRL here goes, anyway:

FirstTab, are you sure that your website isn't already on Wordpress...?

If I'm looking at the right website, the source code says it's powered by wordpress.

CMS is content management system. It allows for novices like me to make changes to their website with little or any help from experts/

Shirley you are not alone

I've been watching & waiting for someone to explain what CMS is.  I now feel less silly than I did because it appears my website is 100% CMS !

Yes, it's a bit Blue Peter/Mickey Mouse but I'd rather that than not be CMS (apparantly).

@Paul

Haha ...  our website allows me to make many changes. I am so naive about these things I thought they all allowed you do this.

I suppose I have a very considerate, thoughtful, and forward-thinking web designer to thank for having the foresight to provide this.   :)

Joomla

Mine uses Joomla.

Took me about 10 mins to pick up enough to do basic editing - text and numbers, not layout.

Highly recommended. I think you have to get hosting that supports it.

Still Needs Great Content

Just because you have the ability to add new words, you still need to make sure they stand a good chance of achieving whatever you want that particular page to achieve.  But, as no one can say for certain they'll achieve it, you'll need to test them.

But I'm sure you all knew that anyway.

Well it’s too late to say
Well it’s too late to say anything about it because most probably your problem would have been solved yet. But if someone else seeking for the same, then I would like to tell there are number of CMS templates available on net as you can see at nulledlistings.com and more. By just installing such templates you can simply make your website CMS. Most the providers charges certain amount on CMS templates but that does not mean you can’t find it for free. Just search on Google and you will find array of results offering such themes free of cost.
