Why am I continually surprised?

I have gone through the agent authorisation process - code was sent to client - entered into HMRC website - accepted.  Looked at my online list today and he was there. Checked tax return history online - so far so good - but needed to discuss his tax code with HMRC. Rang the agent line - twice - just to double check the level of incompetence. They are saying they have no record of 64-8 - probably that's because their records are behind as I only entered the code a day or so ago.  But the really annoying thing is neither operator (or the manager!) seemed to have any working knowledge of how agent authorisation works these days - just kept asking when the paper 64-8 was filed!  then kept telling me that the records would be updated at the end of May. So in the meantime I can change his personal details and request a repayment but I can't talk to an operator about his tax code.  Sorry maybe its because the weather is pants but I feel the need to rant. Just wasted an hour of my life that I can't even bill anyone for.

Sounds like a job

For the Agent Account Manager

I have had this very same issue

It took three weeks from the SA online authorisation appearing on my clients' list for the 64-8 to registered at HMRC's end!

Paper 64-8

Have I misunderstood the situation, but did you send a paper 64-8 as well as applying online?

I have got to the point where I apply online as well as putting the 64-8 in the post, as certainly for PAYE and VAT, HMRC won't speak to you unless they have the paper version.

It's all a nonsense of course, as surely applying online should be enough. But we are dealing with nitwits so have to play it their way.

@ Moonbeam
You couldn't say it any better or truer than you have.

To answer the first question ...

... because you are an optimist (which is why you're an agent). Were you a pessimist, you would work for HMRC!

Why am I...

... Constantly Confused?

Same Issue

HMRC seem to have "lost" all 64-8's held for our clients for VAT & PAYE - although I can still see them on-line, anytime I phone them they swear they have no 64-8 on file. I am fed-up with HMRC now.

VAT on-line: can you talk to HMRC or just submit returns?

So does an on-line VAT authorisation for VAT enable them to talk to you about the client's VAT, or only authorise you for the service for which you have been authorised, i.e. submitting returns o-nline?

Agent priority line says online VAT auth covers everything

I just called them and they confirmed that the on-line authorisation covers everything. Unfortunately my call recording software crashed! A shame because not many of them seem to know this.

In theory

When ever I call them - they insist they can't see the on-line authority - end of conversation. So yes in theory it covers you for everything, but it looks like the different systems don't actually speak to each other in practice!
