XP & QBO

bye bye again

Didn't find your answer?

I feel like I am on a valedictory software tour as its now goodbye to my old computer and the fantastic XP and a warm (sic) embrace to my windows 10 laptop that is 5 years old that has  been gathering dust since upgraded in April. It's an i3 processor so still works well. This was brought about by Payroll Manager finally stopping working on XP last week so drastic action was required. Payroll is now the effectively the last desktop application that I have , I wonder if there is any news on an online version?  HOWEVER the big benefit of a new computer (ish) is the relatively new QB online app it is a complete revelation it virtually mimics the desktop version and i love it so most of the clients will be online soon, MTD - bring it on (not really) but I remember all the song and dance that accompanied RTI and i think most of us have settled into it very easily and its second nature now. Finally, I now need to decide whether I need Logmein now that almost all programs are online but given the rolling in of Cubby into Logmein i need to decide whether to stay with Log or use dropbox and or Onedrive. i think i am nearly set for the brave new year . Merry Christmas again! Now off to open Dec 4 on my online advent calendar . Toodle pip .

I am currently sitting opposite my 10 year old, who's on another laptop.

All the games she plays are 'cloud' - and her school maths homework is also internet based.

Trying to explain software used to come on CD's (that you paid for) and loaded in seems strangely quaint.

Whilst my workplace is by no means a leader in IT adoption, we are looking at replacement servers next year - and tentatively exploring cloud alternatives to some desk applications.

Funny how things don't appear to change - but then looking back you see how they have.

I remember when XP came in - I thought it looked like Noddyland.

We got used to it though.

I suppose I will get used to W10 on my home laptop.

Work still have W7 everywhere.

The thing I always liked about Windows XP was that you could customise it to look like Windows 95/98!

Not so keen on Win98- always seemed a little fragile, well certainly I had issues with it, but loved Win95. What was before that, was it 3.1, the joys of DOS.

However stretching back even further into the dark ages there was nothing wrong with A4 analysis pads and before them the foolscap analysis sheets were okay as long as the binders used for them were not A4. The foolscap sheets had an interesting yellowed tint to the paper rather than the white glare of the newcomer A4 pads.

And before them, albeit before my time ,I do have at home a very large unused half calf bound ledger (It weighs a lot as is pretty large, certainly not exactly portable), which I am sure was acceptable to use if one had the muscles; I also have accompanying it 1940s solicitors' accounts workings/ ETBs, where the analysis sheets have been sewn together and the extracted trial balance alphabetically lists every client balance (either Dr or CR) from such a ledger plus the firm's nominal accounts, and runs for multiple pages.

Anyone ever use an abacus for work?
