£140 for an HP cartridge - there must be a cheaper way!!

My stationery supplier wants to charge £140 for an HP printer cartridge.

I remember buying some non-HP ones 10 years ago which spewed ink everywhere and I also bought some toner and refilled a cartridge myself with pretty much the same effect.

I've looked on the web and have found one for sale for £30 which seems to good to be true. Presumably I also get a winning ticket for the Nigerian Government Lottery thrown in!

Has anyone come across a cost effective and efficient replacement for HP cartridges or should I stop whinging and go pay the higher price

Many thanks

Martin

Time to dump the HP ?

For that amount you could buy a Brother laser complete with toner.

We use Brother lasers with an occasional Kodak ESP7 for the odd bit of scanning or colour printing.

6,000 page toner cartridges for the Brother are around £55, and ink for the Kodak is £10 for black & £15 for colour.

I assume you have a colour HP printer? If so you may find its more cost effective to simply get colour documents printed. It worked out a lot cheaper for me.

As for my HP mono laser printer cartridges - £20 from China via Ebay - bargain! No problems at all, work very well and arrive within a few days.

Buy compatible cartridges, rather than original brand.  Have a look at comp-unlimited.co.uk/shop/laser-printers/

ebay is good for me...

Try searching on "ebay", I too use a HP printer - CM1312nfi colour laser and can buy original HP toner cartridges for a fraction of the price.  Well worth a look but make sure that the cartridges are "original HP"

Toner cartridges have rocketed in price in last 12 months.  You might get a nasty surprise when next you go searching - min these days seems to be £75ish, which is a doubling in price in a couple of years

Have you tried IJT Direct

Sarah K Dunks | | Permalink

I have just bought a black cartridge for my HP for £7.99 - that was with 50% off.  I have been using IJT Direct  for the last 2 years and find them to be very good. http://www.ijtdirect.co.uk/

Yikes..............just looked on Staples web site - £74.99.

Thanks for the "heads up".

Amazon.com

I was recently quite surprised at the comparatively low prices for Inkjet cartridges on Amazon.com - I'd previously used Choice Stationery.  Choice Stationery were slightly cheaper than local "special offers" at Staples or W H Smith, but then Amazon.com turned out to be significantly cheaper than Choice Stationery.

I only buy genuine HP cartridges rather than generic / copy ones - about 10 years ago I found generic ink jet (bubble jet) cartridges, at least for Canon, were most certainly inferior to the originals.

At £140 that you quote I assume that your cartridge is a Laser Jet one, so I'd look to Choice Stationery and Amazon.com to see what prices are available.

Prices have risen dramatically

I use Staples and their prices have shot up over last 12 months or so. But when I asked in store the answer was that they have had to increase theirs along with everyone else. Does anyone know why??

But buying in bulk gets a discount and there are other discount vouchers etc to be had. But I always buy genuine cartridges for my Epson, have had too many problems with so called compatible versions, they just don't pay in the long run.

Another place to try if you haven't already

I use cartridge monkey and buy the recycled ones, they are cheaper and more friendly to the environment :-)

Here is another

We use http://www.toners4less.co.uk

Orders arrive on time, prices are good (for us) and the original and compatible toners work fine.

Have not bought any HP from them though only Brother.

Beware Refilled or Recycled Cartridges

bencooper | | Permalink

Only comment would be to avoid refilled or recycled cartridges. Short term savings on cartridges can lead to long term costs on printer servicing or even new printers when these cheap ptions go wrong. You also get a lower print quality from cheaper options.

I disagree about the recycled cartridges

Been using them for years and never had any problems

I use www.internet-ink.co.uk , they have both HP and HP compatible cartridges. I have used compatible for last couple of years and these are absolutely fine.

Recycled cartridges no problems and much cheaper than HP

I have used recycled cartridges for around 4 years in place of HP and have had no problems. I use Green Cartridges www.greencartridges.co.uk and have always had good service.

change mind set !

looks like you have a color laser ?

if so, why not reset the default to black print......will save a heck of a lot of color wastage... and print may speed up

you can always use color when REALLY needed by changing the default

as to the posts here already on 7.99 etc yes there is a big difference between color laser and 4 cartridge vesus 1 cartrdige inkjet even if both printers are hPs ..I know    i use recylced /refilled HPs for inkjet nad they are super.  "cheap consumables for cheap printer"

if the laser is near end of life you can certailny extract the value propostion by user recycled laser cartridges  whether hp or any other maker.  ensure you do not use them if still under warranty

I was told it was the Euro..

Anonymous | | Permalink

When I searched a couple of months ago I was amazed at the price increase - from £55ish to £75.  When I asked (Viking I think) they said they are supplied from Europe and it was the Euro therefore that had sent the prices rocketing.  I looked all around and to be honest there wasn't a lot in it - this was for a black & white brother - the colour inkjet is saved for special occasions!

compatibles are fine with HP but ...

hsr1012 | | Permalink

...beware with epson they cause no end of problems.

We get our laserjet toner (colour and mono) from CSL group, cartridge world and micom.  We use compatibles and prices start from £25 +VAT for the mono and £45 + VAT for the colour.

We have had no problems with them, print life on them is only slightly less than that of originals.

For inkjets we have found amazon.co.uk to be the cheapest and that is for originals.

Hope this helps.

Great Response - many thanks

I spent a little time looking at the websites of the various suppliers suggested and also weighed up the recycled/pattern arguments.

Eventually I decided to dip my toe into the recycled water and went with IJT Direct as recommended by Sarah. The cartridge came to about £35 and arrived the next day. At first the cartridge didn't work at all - some technology issue with my printer not recognising a chip in the cartridge but after speaking to the IJT Direct helpdesk (nightmare getting through but very helpful when I did) all was resolved

So far, so good. The cartridge behaves exactly like an original and at this stage I would recommend it

Many thanks to everyone for taking the time to respond

Types of toner cartridge available.

hornetcs | | Permalink

Remanufactured toners can be very cost effective, but only if the quality is high enough. There are basically four types of toner cartridge you can buy:

OEM or Original - manufactured and branded by the printer manufacturer

Refilled - An empty OEM toner that has simply been refilled. As internal parts are not replaced these can give inferior print results.

Compatible - A newly manfactured item that is not manufactured or branded by the printer manufacturer

Remanufactured (sometimes called Recycled) - An old OEM toner cartridge that has been factory reconditioned. These are factory cleaned and often have internal parts replaced as part of the process.

If a refilled, compatible or remanufactured unit is purchased it is important to make sure the correct grade of toner powder is in the cartridge. Some less reputable companies use very cheap generic toner powder that is a poor match to the original toner, and can lead to long term problems with wear of other internal printer parts.

Admittedly it's a very cheap mono laser (HP Lserjet 1020) but I bought a compatible toner cartridge yesterday for £35 inc VAT and that's the double capacity one. Getting a compatible for our Brother laser a few months ago was only a few quid more, I think.
