20% VAT rate?

20% VAT rate?

Didn't find your answer?

Going through an expense claim I came across some parking tickets from Jury's Inn marked "V.A.T. 20%".

Sure enough the alleged VAT element of £1.30 would appear to have been calculated at 20% on £6.50, the gross amount being £7.80.

The tickets are not valid as a VAT receipt anyway as they do not disclose Jury's VAT registration number so it is only of academic interest. However I am curious to know if there is now a 20% rate in the UK?

No, it was parked in Birmingham...
...also I have found out that the Irish VAT rate for parking is 21% because I was thinking along similar lines. The bill for the actual room charges was computed using 17.5% and quoting a GB VAT number.

Maybe it's just a programming error with the parking machines but if Jury's have been 'accidently' collecting VAT at 20%, is there any potential consequence for them from HMRC?

No 20% VAT rate in the UK but...
There's no 20% VAT rate in the UK but Jurys is an Irish hotel chain so maybe the 'stationery' for the car park machines got mixed up or the car was parked in Eire?
