64-8 Fiasco!!

64-8 Fiasco!!

Didn't find your answer?

Is anyone else having fun and games with the CAA Team at Newcastle? I've just been told today that they are dealing with 64-8's from 1st May at the moment - that puts them over 5 weeks behind! How are we agents meant to service our clients if it takes this long to set up agent authorities???

Me too
I had a client disappear off my list a couple of months ago.

Sent copy of 64-8, with a letter asking for an explanation of why the 64-8 had been removed.

No reply yet, but client has reappeared! It's a miracle!

64-8
I'm beginning to wonder if the old 'DI's cupboard' has re-surfaced. A 64-8 sent to the CAA team on 31/5 has been processed and the client is on our list but a number submitted before that date are still absent...

Paper or online
I have found that using online registration of your client is faster. The problem is it relies on the client to let you have the code. So far that has not been a problem but I have been careful which clients I have used it with.

However, if I have the client in front of me I still get the 64-8 because if they drop off your online list it is good to have a bit of paper to send HMRC a copy of.

You might think the delays in processing paper 64-8s was to push us down the online registration route but, the last time I regstered a client on line it took longer for them to get the code letter than before!

Mr Kendrew, that's nothing.

I once took great pleasure in sending the Revenue a photocopy of a 64-8 that they had held for over 20 years, and asking them to pull their finger out and reply to my query instead of faffing about (not quite in those terms, but I did enjoy writing the letter).

Oh Indeed!
Sent in CWF1 and 64-8 forms for an H&W partnership back in April. 2 x CWF1 and 3 x 64-8.

Received a letter with reference for husband, but nothing for wife or partnership.

When I spoke to HMRC, they had 64-8 for husband, but not wife. Confirmed (after some wrangling) that wife was registered as a partner, but no 64-8.

Turns out CWF1 for Mr and Mrs were both dealt with on 4 May, but 64-8 for Mr not processed until the 8th! No wonder the 64-8 for Mrs and Pship went astray. All forms were stapled together.

Have now had to get a new 64-8 signed for Mrs and Pship and sending to local t/o with a letter. Extra work for no fee.

Harrumph.
Rant Over.

64-8 problem
Yes, we are having the same problem! But we were told today that they are working on 26th April at present - so they don't seem to actually know what date they are working on. We have at least 75 that have not been logged yet. Trying to speak to HMRC is a non-starter. They refer you to the CAAT team - Why? They can't give us any information regarding the taxpayer. Absolute nightmare! And our SA online is so incorrect. We have about 150 clients missing off the list which have been lodged months ago. They make our job very stressful!!

5 weeks ..... I wish!
I had two letters last week from HMRC refusing to speak to me about two particular (completely separate) clients without a 64-8.

In both cases, forms 64-8 had been sent in over 10 years ago!!

64-8
You're lucky! My recent dealings with Manchester HMRC revealed they were still dealing with post from19.03.07!

Not good enough
It does seem like a losing battle. Summed up when they told me on phone they are processing a 3 week backlog (the official figure!) and then announced the date they are currently processing was 5-6 weeks ago.

Worse!
I have been helping a friend's father with his tax and sent in a 64-8 in January. The intelligent souls in Newcastle obviously looked only at the surname and postcode and noted my husband as the agent. (He is registered as an agent from some years back) Same surname but different first names (and initials) conforming as one might expect to our respective genders.

Apparently they cannot check the original 64-8 as they are manually filed in a room somewhere and there are thousands of them. Despite agreeing to accept a photocopy they have still not corrected the agent's details. Some 5 months on it is still not resolved.

Fortunately my husband & I are on good terms and he passes post on to me. Sheer incompetence by HMRC.
