64-8s - unreasonable delays?

64-8s - unreasonable delays?

Didn't find your answer?

We sent in a query over a new client's tax coding at the beginning of March, enclosing a shiny new signed 64-8 form.

I called the tax office this morning to check on progress since we hadn't heard anything. I was told we weren't registered as agents yet, so I pointed out that it was nearly a month since we sent the 64-8 in. Not good enough, I'm afraid, as it takes, I was told, 40 working days to get everything registered.

Is it just me, or is this ridiculously long? I've had to go back to a client and basically tell them to call the tax office themselves since we can't do it for them (not if they want an answer now, anyway).

This isn't the only time lately when we've looked incompetent because of Revenue inefficiently (or cock-ups).

Excuse the whinging, but is it just me? Am I being unreasonable? The Revenue staff I speak to are generally lovely people, but the system sucks, to put it mildly.

Rant over.

Your not alone
I've had the same problem, it took three months to sort out all in all, the 64-8's went in along with a covering letter explaining that I still hadn't had my agent code despite trying to get one for the last three months!!

Revenue didn't act on this until at least 50 days later as his previous accountant was still receiving info for the client. I wrote them a further letter when I heard about this along with copies of the 64-8's, I tried speaking to the agent maintainer but never actually managed to get through to speak to the right person.

Eventually after another letter chasing up the 64-8s for 16 clients, I got a response 5 weeks later with only eleven clients details, don't know what happened to the other five and still haven't got to the bottom of this!

Is it the systems that are at fault or the lack of common sense of the operators - or more likely, the operators are now not allowed to think for themselves, if this is the state the revenue is in it's no wonder we had strike action back in January!
