Purely for curiosity does anyone know why we use Dr as an abbreviation for debits? Does it simply follow from Cr or is there a historical or other reason?
Many Thanks

According to a Google search
Dr is an ancient Italian abbreviation for the Italian word ‘debare’; meaning ‘debit’.

I think I read somewhere that the term debtor was, in days gone by, "debitor".....hence dr.
I'm no expert but...
I would say Dr. is short for Debtor and Cr. is short for Creditor. Anyone know any different, then please enlighten me.
