AccountingWeb in the evenings

AccountingWeb in the evenings

Didn't find your answer?

I seem to have difficulty accessing the Profiled items in the evenings. The machine just freezes up and I need to perform: CNTLR+ALT+DEL and from Task Manager end the browser process to get everything going.

Anyone had similar experience. It happened on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Paul Morris of AccountingWeb ' what have you done to the system?

Regards,

Jay Tanna

I may have just found the solution!
I think I have found the solution to the problem. The JavaScript used in the webpage contains a query using OAS, which is either not defined or not available globally within the page. The errors are:

OAS_query = '?ID=71659&D=448&H=455&F=0&ZONE=ACCOUDY>
............^

oas is not defined.

Perhaps, AWEB’s webmaster could look into this.

There are lots of other trivial errors in JavaScripts but I am not listing them all here.

Hope this should now enable to resolve the problem and we could start using our tried and tested (dare I say fast) browser namely Netscape!

Just experienced something new!

I have started using both browsers at home - Internet Exlorer and Netscape. Preference is still for Netscape but there you have it!

When you try accessing anything which is related to ITZone or Sofware, Netscape freezes! So I try launching IE and it works. Is John and his team trying something new?

I can give links to messages which gives me problems but there are many to list here but suffice it to say that they are all IT related questions or profiled as such.

Thanks to Kevin for the development view
Kevin Glass and our webmaster (Paul Morris) have put the technical point of view very effectively, and I'm sorry that the editorial team hasn't been able to keep up with this thread.

Aside from the housekeeping/Netscape issues that kicked this thread off, the discussion about cookies is something we do have a policy on - and one which we will adjust to remain within the bounds of whatever laws apply, as Kevin (or chief technology guru) explained.

We use cookies and profiling data on AccountingWEB to speed up your experience of the site and to tailor it for your needs and interests of our users. Much of what we publish is free and the profile data we collect helps us define the audience available for our advertisers - who help pay the site's running costs. We also use the data to plan new content and direct you towards material that matches your interests.

When you next visit the site, click the link that says "visitor" or your name at the top left of the page and you will be taken through to the profile section. Telling us about your job position and which topics interest you will clear your access to all of AccountingWEB's free content.

You can also add or remove newswires from the "My Services" menu. Because the profile data is held on a secure server, some Netscape users may experience problems. If this is the case, email [email protected] and we will fix it for you. Thanks as always for your interest and comments on Any Answers: the interaction with our members is another key feature of AccountingWEB!

How many REAL web technicians does it take to change a light bul
Re: Re: Gareth Lewis

"'Cookies....protective web technicians'
The use of cookies across the internet is widespread. Ever visited Amazon, Yahoo, Lastminute, BBC?"

A billion flies may eat s**t, but it still doesn't taste that great to me.

"Micro$oft did not invent cookies, a protocols manager in Netscape's client product division wrote the cookies specification for Navigator 1.0, the first browser to use the technology."

This comment must have been displaced from your response to Jay, since I never said Microsoft invented cookies (I would be hard pushed to think of anything they actually invented) nor would I, since I did know where cookies originated, and how their use has been since perverted by coders on automatic pilot.

"'Profiled Items take longer to view'
When you read a profiled item, there are no extra reads/writes on the database than for any other page you view on the site, there is just an extra check to see whether you can view the item based upon your user profile and how the item is protected. This check takes micro-seconds."

Can't see where I said this either - and the fact that you have acknowledged (the obvious point) that there is differential processing occurring for access to profile-only elements might support my charitable suggestion as to where the critical weakness in your system may lie.

"'these intrusive mechanisms which power the pop-up/banner ad revenue stream'
Most of AccountingWEB is a free resource" . . . etc

Kevin, you're obviously not just a web technician; you also understand your business model - which currently depends upon these intrusive mechanisms which power the pop-up/banner ad revenue stream.

And I presume from the deafening silence regarding my other question that Sift have no contingency plans. Maybe I'll start a separate discussion. Or maybe not.

(Answer to header question - just one, but it has to be an Open Source light bulb or the REAL web technician will just sit in the dark saying rude things about it)

Reply to Gareth and Kevin

Gareth,

Some of the points I might have raised in my various messages in particular about writing to disks. I assumed that the whole idea of profiling is to collect various info about us.

If there is no record anywhere what is the point of profiling then? Why is it necessary. Perhaps, the users should post to non profiled catagories to attract maximum response!

Kevin,

I use Netscape Communicator version 4.79 (not version 6 yet!).

Have you tried using Netscape from your home PC?

Thanks, Jay
Actually I know how to access my profile. There are a number of ways in addition to your suggestion.

My problems is that they don't work, and as I have said, it is probably the firewall settings on my organisation's web access server that cause this to fail.

That'll teach me . . .
. . . to make jokes about cookies. I forgot temporarily how protective web technicians can be about these intrusive mechanisms which power the pop-up/banner ad revenue stream.

And of course it meant that the point of my posting (that it might be the additional validation processing for profiled items which is the source of the problem at back up time - since there appear to have been no complaints regarding non-profiled items) was lost.

Never mind. I'll stick to light-bulb jokes from now on.

Gareth of course that is the case!
Gareth,

The reason for profiling is given as:

"Profiling is a quick process of answering simple questions about your background. It enables AccountingWEB to keep up to date with your interests and to tailor our service accordingly"

Unless they record all our actions and habits of browsing the web they can't "keep up to date with your interests". Writing to any magnetic media is a slow process (in computer terms) and so everything slows down.

In my case it was more or less crashing the system. I like using Netscape Browsers and it Aweb's process is not compatible with this browser. What a shame AWEB is colluding with Microsoft to destroy competitors!

Neils Profile Problem

Neil,

To access your profile you need to click (double?) on your name which appears on the browser on left hand side just below these two items:

Home
Welcome
Your Name (Neil Eglintine)

You will be confronted with your entries which you must have filled in months ago if not years ago!

This is your chance to update it so that AWEB can cater for your interest.

No profile, no problems
Just to comment that I haven't completed a profile and I've had no problems with freezes.

Maybe it's something to do with profiling causing the infinite number of cookies created by normal use of the site being doubled, with our poor little PCs not being able to cope with a mathematically fantastic number.

And while we're on the subject, is there a contingency plan for Accountingweb if Europe does make cookies illegal, particularly given the current furore over in the US about the issue?

AW Big Freeze-up
You should try it at 2 or 3 in the morning,Jay! It freezes regularly and leaves me hanging by my fingernails until I do a re-boot - or go to bed! I also note that the titles on the right hand pane are in larger scrip than they used to be. Is this also deliberate or is it my screen settings?

Problems also
I'm also having problems in the evenings, as Jay and John are saying, screens keep on freezing, often needing Task Manager or a reboot.

I just thought that maybe it had something to do with my slower modem on my new computer, but maybe not.

Steve

Slow response from AccountingWeb.co.uk
I'm glad to see that some of our members are so committed to the community that they can be found surfing the accounting super highway at such late hours, when mere mortals such as myself are tucked up in bed.
To answer your queries at around the times you are having problems our database begins its nightly back up, which causes a large strain on the system and can make responses to browser requests rather sluggish.
I don't however believe this to be the cause of your machines totally locking up, overuse could be one factor ;o)

Profile and response
I can't access my profile EVER. I suspect the firewall settings at work are the culprit.

Slow responses in the evening may be the fault of your ISP. I have a couple of accounts set up. If I really need to access a particular site and the response is poor, I try another connection. This often solves the problem. Probably due to different routing between me and the target site.
