Accounts without supporting records

Accounts without supporting records

Didn't find your answer?

I have a couple of self-employed clients who are always reluctant to provide the underlying invoices and receipts for their business accounts. They provide summaries of income and expenditure, and will provide further information and a descriptive analysis of each type of income/expense when requested. I don't think there is anything sinister in their actions, but they do seem to expect me to apply "their" accounts to the tax return without too much probing. What do other readers think?"

Communication
I think you need to explain to them clearly what you want from them if you are to act and why. If they dont want to provide information to you, you need to ask why - do they feel it unnecessary, do they feel it will incur unnecessary costs?

One point to consider is that you may save them some tax if you are able to check the underlying records.

I personally dont like to work with clients like this - I feel it is a two way relationship and my clients need to trust me and vice versa. I also wouldnt want to complete a tax return without seeing the underlying records.
