I have been asked to relocate 3 days a week to a destination 200 miles form my home and current work base. This will be for around a year. I do not wish to live in hotels for that long and intend to buy a cheap flat. I am assuming that I could claim some of that cost form my employer, who is happy to pay as it would be cheaper than hotels. However, all the literature I have viewed has indicated that apart from a relocation allowance of £8k I would be taxed on any amounts I claimed as expenses.
As I am not selling my existing home would I still be entitled to the £8k tax free?
Also, can anyone suggest a better solution.
